I hope that Topaz’s efforts will serve as a wake up call to Adobe to improve their noise reduction and sharpening/texture algorithms and somehow make them work in concert. Applying extra sharpening and texture does not really bring back the detail that noise reduction has removed. In Lightroom, applying noise reduction globally completely smooths out detail in bird feathers or mammal fur. It’s certainly not perfect or consistent, but it can be impressive. TAKEAWAY 1 - I think that Denoise AI and Sharpen AI both have a place in the bird and wildlife photographer’s processing arsenal.Īs you’ll see in the comparisons below and my video review, Denoise AI in particular does a generally good job of nearly completely wiping noise from the background and also removing noise from the subject while simultaneously preserving or bringing back sharp detail where we want it. With the considerable hype surrounding the new Topaz AI suite of products, I was intrigued when Topaz asked that I download the software and try it out.Īfter 6 weeks out in the field leading workshops and scouting new destinations in Ecuador and my home country of Costa Rica, I returned home (just in time!) and have finally had a chance to try out the Topaz AI products. At the same time, I am not a fanboy in terms of photo gear or photo software, and I always try to provide honest reviews of the products that interest me. I admire the software they make and their initiative in trying to push the envelope in terms of photo editing plugins. I have been a Topaz affiliate for years, and I’ve even done some web content in collaboration with them.
