I will be doing a comparison of Perfect Resize and Topaz Gigapixel AI in the coming weeks.) Plugins constantly need to be reinstalled as Adobe updates Lightroom and Photoshop. TAKEAWAY 2 - Though I was able to come away with some nice results for certain photos, I will not be making Topaz Denoise and Sharpen AI a regular part of my workflow for four reasons.įirst, plugins are a major pain in the eggs, as we say in Spanish :-) Though I appreciate the variety of plugins on the market and have been lucky to try many of them for free at the invite of various companies, I have never made them a part of my workflow. I hope that Topaz’s efforts will serve as a wake up call to Adobe to improve their noise reduction and sharpening/texture algorithms and somehow make them work in concert. Applying extra sharpening and texture does not really bring back the detail that noise reduction has removed. In Lightroom, applying noise reduction globally completely smooths out detail in bird feathers or mammal fur. It’s certainly not perfect or consistent, but it can be impressive. TAKEAWAY 1 - I think that Denoise AI and Sharpen AI both have a place in the bird and wildlife photographer’s processing arsenal.Īs you’ll see in the comparisons below and my video review, Denoise AI in particular does a generally good job of nearly completely wiping noise from the background and also removing noise from the subject while simultaneously preserving or bringing back sharp detail where we want it. It’s about 20 minutes long, but grab a cup of coffee and enjoy it. Please do read on though if you want to see the comparisons that led to my conclusions.Īnd be sure to check out my video review for a thorough discussion of how I processed and compared the photos. So, in the spirit of concise solidarity, I’ll do you a favor and give you the concluding section right up front. I like to cook, and, while I respect the author’s efforts, I do get tired of those blog posts that make you read lots of meandering thoughts before getting to the recipe. I know that many people want to get right to the conclusions. Topaz Denoise AI and Sharpen AI promise to help me directly address both of those concerns. Since most of my work is in the rainforests and cloud forests of the Neotropics, my everyday struggle is with low light and the resulting need to use high ISOs and marginal shutter speeds. If you’re into landscapes, stay tuned for that!įor the purposes of this first review, however, I was interested to see how these two products would work to reduce noise while retaining detail and to bring back sharpness in bird and mammal photos that were shot in low light. I think Denoise AI in particular might be great for reducing noise in nocturnal landscapes and also for dealing with noise where I’ve had to brighten shadow areas in high contrast scenes such as sunrise and sunset. Since landscape photography is one of my main passions, I will be doing a separate blog post and video review on how Topaz Denoise AI and Sharpen AI work for landscapes. As someone who photographs wildlife, birds, macro, and landscapes equally, I can see these two plugins having great potential for lots of different scenarios.

TOPAZ SHARPEN AI WORKFLOW SOFTWARE

With the considerable hype surrounding the new Topaz AI suite of products, I was intrigued when Topaz asked that I download the software and try it out.Īfter 6 weeks out in the field leading workshops and scouting new destinations in Ecuador and my home country of Costa Rica, I returned home (just in time!) and have finally had a chance to try out the Topaz AI products. At the same time, I am not a fanboy in terms of photo gear or photo software, and I always try to provide honest reviews of the products that interest me. I admire the software they make and their initiative in trying to push the envelope in terms of photo editing plugins. I have been a Topaz affiliate for years, and I’ve even done some web content in collaboration with them.
